Local Information
Just an hour's drive from Wellington, Greytown is a charming town renowned for its beautifully restored Victorian architecture and vibrant shopping scene.
Greytown showcases some of the finest examples of Victorian colonial architecture, with its main street being home to New Zealand's most complete row of wooden Victorian buildings. Visitors can enjoy a variety of cafés and restaurants offering seasonal dishes and local wines, alongside unique boutiques and quirky shops selling everything from handcrafted toys and handbags to jewellery, antiques, and art.
Founded in 1854, Greytown was New Zealand's first planned inland settlement. Established by Wellington settlers seeking affordable farmland, it was named in honour of Governor Sir George Grey, who supported the development of the town.
Sustainability
ASURE Accommodation Group works hard to support our beautiful country by undertaking practical sustainable actions. Many of these you will not see, but some you may notice – all make a difference to the environment we live in.
Here are some of the practices our members have in place:
- Buy from local sources, which supports employment in our community and reduces the distance our goods must travel to reach us.
- Work with suppliers that can provide our group with environmentally sustainable products.
- Donate supplementary products and excess bedding and furniture.
- LED light bulbs are installed on almost all of our premises.
- Temperature controlled heating and cooling.
- Reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by separating it for recycling.
- Use mostly biodegradable and non-toxic cleaning products.
- Recycle and/or repurpose product containers.
- Soap & hair wash dispensers in all bathrooms to minimise waste.
- Train our committed staff to consistently carry out our environmental practices.
- All ASURE members are actively involved in our local community and provide sponsorship to many community groups.
We trust you are enjoying our country and hope you will help us reduce our impact on it by considering the following things:
- When not needed or when leaving a room, turn off lights or equipment such as heat pumps.
- Turn off taps tightly when not directly using water.
- Didymo and other aquatic pests could squeeze the life out of our country’s most precious rivers and lakes. You can help protect your favourite waterways by always Check, Clean, Dry any gear that comes into contact with the water, between every waterway, every time.
We appreciate your support in helping sustain our lovely country.
