Some Suggested Activities
Cape Palliser Lighthouse and Seal Colony
Seals, stunning walks, and the spiffiest lighthouse in the country - you'll find them all at Cape Palliser. It's just 1.25 hours drive from ASURE Oak Estate, via Martinborough, past vineyards and finishing with unforgettable sea views along the way.
A grand old lady of a lighthouse cast iron Cape Palliser lighthouse has stood on the cliffs here since 1897 - and she's still shining strong. Climb the 253 steps to see her up close.
The Cape is also home to the North Island's largest fur seal colony. If you're here November to January you might just spot some pups.
For up-to-date weather forecasts go to the Ning Nong Webcam
Make a day of it: visit the lighthouse; spot the seals; walk to the Pinnacles or have Fish and Chips at the Lake Ferry Pub; return via Martinborough and stop for a winetasting or do a loop and head to Featherston to check out their bookshops.
Fell Locomotive Museum - Featherston
I grew up with the story of Harry the Fell Engine being played on the childrens' stories on Sunday radio. We also played on Harry whenever we were visiting our cousins. He was slowly rotting away in the park in Featherston, so it was fantastic to read in the newspaper that Harry was being rescued and taken in doors to his own museum, where he was going to be restored.
The engine in the museum is referred to as Steam Locomotive H199. Is it Harry? In my mind it is. Regardless, the restoration of this fantastic piece of engineering is not to be missed.
Here are some of the key takeaways that make this museum compelling:
- Uniqueness: It houses the only remaining steam-powered Fell railway locomotive in the world.
- Historical Significance: Locomotive H 199 played a crucial role in conquering the steep Rimutaka Incline for 77 years, starting way back in 1877.
- Engineering Marvel: John Barraclough Fell's four grip wheel system on a raised center rail is described as "unique," highlighting the ingenuity required to overcome such a challenging terrain.
- Dedicated Enthusiasts: The fact that the museum is "housed and tended to by a group of dedicated rail enthusiasts" suggests a passion and depth of knowledge that visitors can appreciate.
- Comprehensive Storytelling: The museum uses a variety of media – audio-visual programmes, models, photographs, and memorabilia – to bring the story of the locomotives and the Rimutaka Incline to life.
- Local Connection: It's a key part of the Wairarapa's history and offers a glimpse into the challenges and innovations of the past in this specific region.
- Proximity to Greytown: Being located in Featherston, it's easily accessible from Greytown, making it a great day trip option for our guests at ASURE Oak Estate Motor Lodge.

Discover the Dramatic Beauty of Castlepoint
Castlepoint is one of the most breathtaking locations on the Wairarapa coast. The lighthouse is perched on one end of a fossil-rich limestone reef. The towering 162-metre Castle Rock is at the other. Named by Captain Cook in 1770—who thought Castle Rock looked like a castle’s battlements—this rugged destination is part of the Castlepoint Scenic Reserve.
Explore two scenic walking tracks:
- Lighthouse Walk – 30 minutes return
- Deliverance Cove Track – 1.5 hours return
Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, fur seals, and an array of coastal seabirds such as terns, gulls, and shags. If you’re lucky, you might spot the rare Castlepoint daisy (Brachyglottis compactus) – a unique wildflower found only here, growing on the limestone cliffs and reef.
A perfect day trip from Greytown – bring your camera and your sense of wonder.
