Our Wee Hint: Make a weekend of it
Visiting the Wairarapa from Wellington? Avoid the traffic over the Remutakas and make a weekend of it by staying with us at ASURE Oak Estate Motor Lodge in Greytown.
Enjoy some time exploring Greytown, a good night's sleep, and an easy drive to Carterton for both events. And if you're staying a little longer, we have some pretty good discounts to make it even more tempting.
Carterton Film Society – Monthly Movie Night
The last Friday of every month (except December)
Looking for something a little different during your stay in the Wairarapa? The Carterton Film Society hosts a monthly movie night on the last Friday of every month (except December), screening a carefully selected programme of acclaimed art-house and independent films from around the world.
Friday, 25 September 2026 | 7:30pm
Age of Panic
Sunset’s September film is Justine Triet’s frantic farce Age of Panic – a couple’s custody battle unfolds against the tumultuous, hotly contested 2012 French presidential election, pitting right-winger Nicolas Sarkozy against socialist Francois Hollande.
Screenings are held in the Rangatahi Hub at the Carterton Events Centre, with doors opening at 7.00 pm. Arrive early to enjoy a complimentary cuppa, delicious cake or snacks (including gluten-free options), and a chance to chat with fellow movie lovers before the film begins at 7.30 pm.
The Carterton Film Society is part of the New Zealand Federation of Film Societies and is run entirely by local volunteers. Throughout the year they showcase an impressive range of international films, documentaries, classics and award-winning features that you won't usually find in mainstream cinemas.
As the society operates under non-commercial screening rights, attendance is available to members only. If you're planning to visit the Wairarapa regularly, annual memberships offer excellent value, with a full-year option or a convenient three-film sampler membership available.
If your visit happens to coincide with the last Friday of the month, it's a wonderful way to spend an evening and experience another side of the Wairarapa's vibrant arts and culture scene.
Or, if you're looking for a reason to get away, why not plan a weekend around movie night? Stay at ASURE Oak Estate Motor Lodge in nearby Greytown and spend your days exploring charming cafés, boutique shops, vineyards and local attractions after enjoying an evening of world-class cinema in Carterton.
Better still, check out our Pick Your Deal page before you book - you may be able to score a discount on your stay, making your Wairarapa getaway even better value.

Discover Greytown Through Geocaching
Looking for a fun, inexpensive activity that the whole family can enjoy? Why not give geocaching a try?
Often described as a modern-day treasure hunt, geocaching uses GPS technology to help participants locate hidden containers, known as geocaches. Using nothing more than your smartphone or a GPS device, you can follow clues and search for caches hidden in interesting locations.
What began as a small hobby in 2000 has grown into a worldwide activity enjoyed by millions of people. It's a fantastic way to explore somewhere new, discover places you might otherwise overlook and spend some time outdoors.
Greytown is an excellent place to get started, with more than 80 geocaches hidden within a 5km radius. There's even one hidden just a short distance from ASURE Oak Estate Motor Lodge, and we often spot visitors searching for it. If you're planning a walk or bike ride along the trail, you'll also discover several caches along the way, making geocaching a great excuse to slow down and explore.
The best part? Getting started is completely free. Simply create an account, download the app and begin your own treasure-hunting adventure.
